How quickly does topical corticosteroids relieve skin rash?

Less swelling, redness or itch can be an early response, but the skin may not return to its usual colour immediately. A corticosteroid controls inflammation; it does not treat every cause of rash. An infection, contact reaction or another skin condition may need a different plan. A rash that changes quickly, becomes more widespread or returns after stopping deserves review rather than repeated self-treatment.

Apply a thin layer only to the areas advised, at the stated frequency and for the recommended duration. Wash your hands after application and avoid the eyes. Do not cover the area tightly unless instructed, and avoid adding other medicated creams without checking. Gentle cleansing and a suitable moisturiser may support the skin barrier. Seek medical advice if the rash is not improving in the timeframe given, spreads, becomes painful, develops crusting or discharge, or appears after a new medicine. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or lip swelling, widespread blistering, skin peeling, or a rash with fever. Ask before use on a child, the face, skin folds or genitals.
