How quickly does TENS therapy relieve lower back pain?

Short answer
TENS therapy may change lower back pain during or soon after a session, although relief varies and may be temporary rather than a fix for the underlying cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Timing
- Any benefit may appear during or soon after use and may not last.
- Purpose
- TENS can support comfortable movement but does not replace assessment.
What TENS can and cannot do
TENS uses small electrical pulses through adhesive pads on the skin. The sensation may feel like tingling, and the setting should remain comfortable. It may change how pain signals are processed while the device is being used, helping some people move or exercise more easily. It does not identify why the back hurts, repair every spinal problem, or guarantee lasting relief.
Response differs with the pain pattern, pad placement, programme settings, skin sensitivity, and other treatment being used. A clinician or physiotherapist should show you where pads belong and how to combine TENS with activity, mobility, or strengthening.
Use it thoughtfully
Follow the device instructions and your clinician's advice. Check the skin before and after use, keep pads on intact skin, and remove them if burning, marked redness, or irritation develops. Do not place pads over broken skin or the front of the neck, and do not use TENS in water. Ask for individual advice if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, or are pregnant.
When back pain needs urgent assessment
Seek urgent care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, severe or rapidly worsening weakness, or back pain after major trauma. Prompt medical review is also needed with fever, unexplained weight change, or pain that is severe at rest. TENS should not delay assessment of these warning signs.
Questions to ask
Ask whether TENS is suitable for the suspected cause, where to place the pads, how long to use it, which activities it should help, and what symptoms mean you should stop using it.
