Short answer

Pelvic floor physiotherapy may ease pain during sex over several weeks or longer, depending on the cause, muscle sensitivity, treatment plan and your response.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Treatment style
Often gradual and adapted to sensitivity and muscle relaxation
Consent
You can discuss, pause or decline an internal technique

What can affect progress

Pain may involve pelvic muscle guarding, difficulty relaxing, scar sensitivity, dryness, hormonal changes, nerve irritation or another gynaecological condition. A physiotherapist can assess breathing, posture, hip and pelvic movement, tenderness and the muscles' ability to relax. Treatment often begins gently, with education and techniques that help the nervous system feel safer; strengthening is not suitable for every person with painful sex. Relief may come in stages, such as less anticipation, reduced tenderness, or more comfortable penetration.

Supporting your recovery

Do not push through sharp or escalating pain. Follow the agreed home plan, use comfortable positions, allow arousal and lubrication, and pause when your body signals distress. Discuss any examination or internal treatment beforehand and give consent at each step. Keep notes about location, depth, timing and after-effects of pain. See [Pain During Sex](/symptoms/pain-during-sex/) and [Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy](/treatments/pelvic-floor-and-rehabilitation/pelvic-floor-physiotherapy/).

When to seek medical care

Arrange a gynaecology assessment for new, persistent or worsening pain, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, sores, fever, pelvic pain outside sex, or possible pregnancy. Seek urgent help for severe sudden pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or feeling acutely unwell.

Questions for your doctor

What causes should be checked before physiotherapy? Could dryness, infection, endometriosis, scar tissue or medication contribute? What kinds of touch or exercises are appropriate for me? How will we judge whether treatment is helping?

Questions people ask

Is pain during sex something I should tolerate during therapy?

No. Tell the therapist when pain rises so the technique, position or plan can be changed.

Can physiotherapy find the cause?

It can identify movement and muscle contributors, but persistent pain may also need a medical assessment for other causes.
