How quickly does oral antifungal treatment relieve discoloured nails?

A tablet can reach the infection through the bloodstream, but it cannot instantly replace nail that has already grown out with an altered colour or texture. Improvement is seen near the nail base first, then moves forward as the nail grows. Toenails usually take longer to look normal than fingernails because they grow more slowly. Persistent discolouration can also have causes other than fungus, so appearance alone cannot confirm whether treatment is working.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and do not share tablets or stop early because the colour has not changed yet. Tell your clinician about liver problems, regular medicines, pregnancy, or plans for pregnancy before treatment. Keep nails trimmed and dry, avoid aggressive filing, and follow advice about footwear and treating athlete’s foot. Attend the requested review so the diagnosis and response can be checked.
