How quickly does nebuliser treatment relieve shortness of breath?

The device turns prescribed liquid medicine into an inhaled mist. Depending on the medicine, it may relax tightened airway muscles, reduce swelling, or help move mucus. When one of these problems is driving breathlessness, breathing may become easier during the session or soon afterwards. The response can be limited if the cause is infection, a heart problem, an allergic reaction, a blood clot, or another condition that needs different care. A nebuliser should not delay assessment of new or unexplained breathlessness.

Sit upright and use the mask or mouthpiece as shown. Take calm, normal breaths unless your clinician gives another technique. Follow the exact dose and schedule, and do not use someone else's medicine. Keep a note of how quickly breathing changes and whether relief lasts. If you become more breathless, develop chest pain, or feel faint, stop trying to manage the problem alone and seek urgent help. Clean equipment according to its instructions.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, severe chest pain, or inability to speak normally because of breathlessness. Get urgent assessment for rapidly worsening symptoms, breathlessness at rest, coughing blood, or swelling of the face or throat. If a prescribed nebuliser gives little or short-lived relief, follow the clinician's emergency plan and do not keep taking extra doses without advice.
