How quickly does lymphoedema therapy relieve arm or leg swelling?

A specialist may combine skin care, movement, compression and manual lymphatic techniques suited to your limb and health. Some people notice less heaviness or improved movement before the limb measurements change clearly. Swelling that has been present for a long time may contain firmer tissue and can respond more slowly. The plan may change as the limb becomes more comfortable or as compression needs alter.

Wear compression only as fitted and instructed, and check the skin for rubbing, redness or breaks. Perform the recommended exercises and gentle movement; avoid suddenly increasing activity. Protect the limb from burns, cuts and constriction, keep skin moisturised as advised, and tell the therapist if the garment becomes painful or leaves persistent marks.
