How quickly does laparoscopic excision of endometriosis relieve pain during sex?

Excision removes visible endometriosis lesions while the pelvis recovers from surgery. Incisions, internal healing, pelvic muscle guarding, dryness, and fear of pain can all make penetration uncomfortable early in recovery. Pain may change as swelling settles, but the first comfortable attempt is not a useful test of the final result.

The location and depth of endometriosis matter. Deep disease near the vagina, bowel, bladder, or pelvic nerves can contribute to pain during sex, and pain may also have more than one cause. Improvement should be discussed at follow-up rather than judged by a single day.

Follow the surgeon’s instructions about when to resume vaginal penetration and other activities. Start only when advised, move slowly, use communication and lubrication if appropriate, and stop if pain is sharp or increasing. Non-penetrative intimacy can support closeness while tissues heal.

Keep follow-up appointments and describe the exact depth, position, and quality of pain. If symptoms persist, the clinician may consider pelvic-floor rehabilitation, hormonal management, scar-related issues, or another pelvic pain source.

Seek urgent medical advice for heavy vaginal bleeding, faintness, severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, a swollen abdomen, or difficulty passing urine. Contact the surgical team for foul-smelling discharge, wound redness or drainage, or pain during sex that becomes severe after you have resumed activity.
