How quickly does IV fluid therapy relieve nausea?

Vomiting, diarrhoea, heat exposure and poor intake can leave you dehydrated, which may worsen nausea, weakness and light-headedness. IV fluids restore fluid through a vein when drinking is difficult or inadequate. They do not remove a stomach infection, treat pregnancy-related nausea, relieve a bowel blockage or correct every medicine-related cause. A clinician may need to combine fluids with an anti-nausea medicine or treatment for the trigger.

Tell the clinician how long nausea has lasted, whether you are vomiting, what you have been able to drink, and which medicines you use. If you can keep fluids down, take small frequent sips and restart bland food gradually. Rest, avoid strong smells and do not drive if weak or light-headed. People with heart or kidney disease may need careful fluid monitoring.

Get urgent help for blood or green material in vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, fainting, confusion, chest pain, severe headache, stiff neck or trouble breathing. Seek prompt care if vomiting prevents fluid intake, urine becomes very scarce, or nausea follows a head injury.

Ask what is most likely causing the nausea, whether you need IV fluids or an anti-nausea medicine, how dehydration will be checked, and which foods and drinks are appropriate while recovering.
