How quickly does inhaler therapy relieve chest tightness?

Reliever medicine relaxes tightened airway muscle, so breathing may feel easier soon after a correct dose. Preventer medicine reduces airway inflammation over continued use and may not change an episode already underway. Chest tightness can also come from infection, reflux, anxiety, heart disease, or another cause, so an inhaler response does not identify the cause by itself.

Use the inhaler exactly as prescribed and check your technique with a clinician or pharmacist; poor technique can leave medicine in the mouth instead of the lungs. Sit upright, follow your written asthma action plan if you have one, and keep track of doses and response. Do not use someone else’s inhaler or increase treatment without advice.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to speak normally, or chest pressure that may be heart-related. Seek urgent medical help if the prescribed reliever is not helping, relief is brief, or symptoms are worsening. New chest tightness without a known airway diagnosis also needs assessment.
