How quickly does emollient therapy relieve scaly skin?

Scaling is made of loose or thickened surface skin cells. An emollient softens these cells, reduces water loss, and makes flaking less uncomfortable; it does not remove every cause of scaling. Improvement can be slower when the skin is inflamed, very thick, repeatedly exposed to irritants, or affected by a condition such as eczema or psoriasis. A medicated treatment may be needed alongside moisturising.

Apply a generous layer to slightly damp skin after washing and repeat when the surface feels dry. Do not scrub or peel scales, as this can create irritation and small breaks. Use lukewarm water and fragrance-free products if the area is sensitive. Continue the routine after the skin feels smoother, because stopping as soon as flakes lessen can allow dryness to return.

Book an assessment if scaling persists despite regular emollient use, spreads, becomes very itchy or painful, or appears on the scalp with hair changes. Prompt care is needed for oozing, pus, warmth, swelling, or rapidly worsening redness. A clinician can distinguish simple dryness from inflammation, infection, or another skin disorder.
