During marsupialisation, the cyst is opened and its edges are stitched so fluid can continue to drain. The original rounded lump may feel softer or smaller after the procedure, but local tissue can remain tender, swollen or bruised while it heals. A small amount of drainage is expected as the new opening keeps the area from sealing too early.

Relief is not always immediate. A larger abscess, inflammation around the cyst, or discomfort from the stitches can make the area feel full for a while. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, or difficulty passing urine. These symptoms need assessment for infection, bleeding or another problem with healing.

Ask how the cyst looked during the procedure, how long drainage is expected, which symptoms are normal in your case, and when a recurrent lump should be examined.
