Short answer

Balance and proprioception training may make the knee feel more controlled after several sessions, but dependable improvement in giving way usually develops over weeks of regular practice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Early response
Control may feel better after several sessions.
Steadier progress
Regular practice over weeks is often needed.
Safety
Use support and progress gradually.

What training changes

Proprioception is the body’s sense of joint position. Exercises challenge the knee, hip and ankle to react to movement, uneven support and changes in direction. Early gains may be better awareness and less hesitation; strength, coordination and confidence take repeated exposure. Training cannot repair every ligament, cartilage or bone problem, so ongoing episodes may need an examination rather than simply more exercises.

How to practise safely

Begin with the level chosen by a physiotherapist, such as supported weight shifts or standing balance, and progress only when the knee remains controlled. Use a stable surface and nearby support when needed. Stop if the knee buckles, pain becomes sharp, or swelling increases. Record episodes of giving way, triggers and next-day symptoms; this helps the therapist adjust the programme and identify movements that are not yet ready.

When to get the knee checked

Seek prompt assessment after a new injury with marked swelling, a locked knee, inability to bear weight, or repeated buckling. Arrange review if the knee gives way during ordinary walking, symptoms worsen with training, or there is persistent catching, warmth or substantial pain. A fall caused by instability also warrants medical advice, even if the knee later feels calmer.

Questions to ask

Ask which structure may be causing instability, which exercises are suitable now, how to progress them, and what degree of soreness is acceptable. Clarify whether you need a brace, imaging, strength work or a temporary change in work and sport.

Questions people ask

Can balance exercises stop knee giving way immediately?

Usually they are a gradual treatment. A sudden buckle, locked knee or new swelling should be assessed rather than pushed through with exercise.

What if the knee gives way during an exercise?

Stop that movement, steady yourself safely and tell your physiotherapist. The exercise may need a simpler position or a different approach while the cause is reviewed.
