How Quickly Antibiotics Relieve Spreading Skin Redness

Antibiotics work against susceptible bacterial infection, but the skin may remain red, warm or tender while inflammation settles. The edge should stop advancing and symptoms should begin trending better after treatment starts. Redness can take longer to fade than pain or warmth. If the diagnosis is different, such as an allergic reaction, viral process or non-infectious inflammation, antibiotics may not help. Do not use leftover medicine or share a prescription, because the correct drug and route depend on the infection and your health.

Take the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or covering it tightly, and mark or photograph the outer edge if advised so progression is easier to judge.
