Short answer

In skin of colour, razor bumps can leave more noticeable dark marks after inflammation, while tightly curved hairs may keep re-entering the skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Inflammation followed by dark marks

What this difference means

Pseudofolliculitis barbae develops when a shaved or clipped hair curves back into nearby skin. The resulting bump can be red, brown, purple or close to the surrounding skin, so redness may be less obvious on deeper skin tones. Inflammation can stimulate extra pigment, producing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that remains after the bump settles. Repeated shaving, plucking or close trimming can create a cycle of new bumps and marks. A dark spot alone does not prove that active inflammation is still present.

Ways to reduce new bumps

Let the hair grow slightly rather than shaving extremely close. Use a clean, sharp tool, shave in the direction of hair growth, and avoid stretching the skin. Do not pick or squeeze bumps, because this can deepen inflammation and pigment change. A clinician can distinguish razor bumps from acne, folliculitis or another cause and may discuss topical anti-inflammatory treatment, retinoid treatment, hair-removal adjustments or laser hair reduction. Ask about options suited to your skin tone, especially if marks are persistent.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if bumps are painful, repeatedly pus-filled, spreading, leaving scars, or not improving after changing shaving habits. Seek prompt medical care for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, or redness near the eye. Early assessment can help limit ongoing inflammation and reduce the chance of lasting texture or pigment changes.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be razor bumps or another follicle condition? Which shaving method is least irritating for my hair pattern? How should I treat dark marks without irritating my skin? Would prescription treatment or hair reduction be appropriate?

Questions people ask

Are razor bumps different in darker skin?

The underlying hair-skin reaction is similar, but inflammation may be harder to see and pigment marks may be more prominent.

Should I stop shaving?

Not always. Changing closeness, direction and technique may help; a clinician can advise if another hair-removal approach is better.
