How oral antibiotics for acne differ in pregnancy

Acne treatment is reviewed around pregnancy stage, the severity of the acne, previous medicines, allergies, and other health conditions. Tetracycline antibiotics, including doxycycline and lymecycline, are generally avoided during pregnancy, particularly later in pregnancy, because of concerns about effects on developing teeth and bones. Other oral antibiotics may sometimes be considered, but the choice and duration must be individualised by a clinician.

Do not start, stop, or swap an acne antibiotic based on an old prescription. A medicine that was suitable before conception may need replacing, and acne can often be managed with pregnancy-compatible topical care or non-antibiotic options.

Tell the prescriber that you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, and share every medicine, supplement, and skincare product you use. If pregnancy is discovered while taking an oral antibiotic, contact the prescriber or maternity team promptly for a medication review; do not take extra doses while waiting for advice.

Use gentle cleansing, avoid picking or squeezing spots, and ask about a pregnancy-appropriate acne plan. Seek advice before using retinoid tablets, retinoid creams, or combination products, because some acne ingredients are not suitable during pregnancy.

Arrange medical advice for painful deep acne, rapidly worsening inflammation, scarring, or a spreading rash. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, or widespread blistering after a medicine. Contact your maternity team promptly if you are worried about an exposure or cannot keep medicine down.
