How long until COVID is no longer contagious?

Short answer
COVID is generally most contagious around symptom onset and becomes less likely to spread as you improve, but use current guidance and extra precautions while symptoms continue.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Highest transmission
- Risk is often greatest near symptom onset.
- Safer contact
- Wait for clear improvement and follow current local advice.
How contagiousness changes
Contagiousness is not decided by one symptom or one test alone. It is influenced by when illness began, whether symptoms are improving, immune health and the current virus variant. Some people can spread infection before they feel ill, and people with weakened immunity may remain infectious longer. Tiredness, loss of smell or difficulty concentrating may persist after the period of greatest transmission has passed. Long COVID symptoms do not by themselves show that live virus is still spreading.
Reducing spread
Stay home and limit close contact while acutely unwell, especially with older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a weakened immune system. Improve airflow, avoid crowded indoor places and wear a well-fitting mask if contact is necessary. Follow current UAE public-health advice for testing, work, school and healthcare visits. Tell close contacts if you tested positive or developed symptoms so they can monitor themselves and protect others.
When to get help
Contact a clinician if fever returns, symptoms worsen after improving, or you remain significantly unwell. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion, blue or grey lips or difficulty staying awake. People with immune suppression should ask early how long to take precautions because their infectious period may differ.
Questions for a clinician
Ask when you can return to work or shared spaces, whether your medicines or immune status alter the advice, and how to protect a vulnerable household member. Discuss persistent Fatigue, joint pain or low mood separately if they limit recovery.

Questions people ask
Can I still be contagious without a fever?
Yes. Fever is only one part of the picture, so use symptom improvement, current guidance and precautions together.
Can a lingering cough mean I am contagious?
Not necessarily. Cough can outlast the infectious period, but masking and ventilation are sensible while symptoms continue.
