How long should a sprained wrist hurt?

Short answer
A sprained wrist should gradually hurt less over days to weeks, although tenderness, stiffness, or pain with loading can last longer after a more significant injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Expected direction
- Pain should gradually ease over days to weeks
- Common lingering issues
- Tenderness, stiffness, or pain with loading
- Key caution
- A fall can cause fracture-like symptoms
How recovery can feel
A sprain affects the ligaments that support the wrist. Early pain may be accompanied by swelling, bruising, reduced grip, or discomfort when turning the hand. Improvement should show as easier movement and less pain during ordinary tasks, even if pressure on the wrist remains uncomfortable. A fall onto the hand can also cause a fracture, so the label sprain should not be assumed when pain is severe or function is very limited.
Protect and restore movement
In the early period, protect the wrist from heavy lifting and painful loading, use cold wrapped in cloth for short periods if it helps, and keep the fingers moving. A splint may support the wrist for selected activities, but prolonged immobilisation can increase stiffness. As pain allows, gradually restore wrist and forearm movement. Physiotherapy can guide strengthening when everyday use is becoming easier.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment if pain is not gradually improving, grip remains weak, swelling persists, or you cannot move the wrist normally. Seek prompt care after a fall with marked tenderness, deformity, numbness, pale or blue fingers, or inability to use the hand. A clinician may need to check for a fracture or a more substantial ligament injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether imaging is needed, how long to use support, and which movements are safe now. Ask when strengthening or a return to sport, lifting, or repetitive work should begin.

Questions people ask
Is ongoing wrist pain always just a sprain?
No. Persistent or severe pain can reflect a fracture or a more significant ligament injury and deserves assessment.
Should I keep my wrist completely still?
Protect it from painful loading, but gentle finger and later wrist movement can help prevent stiffness when safe.
