How long should a Braxton Hicks last?

Braxton Hicks contractions are tightening sensations caused by the womb contracting during pregnancy. They may feel uncomfortable, but they usually do not build steadily in strength, come closer together or continue despite rest. The abdomen may feel firm during a tightening and soften afterwards.

Timing alone cannot confirm whether labour has started. Regular contractions, increasing pain, pelvic pressure, backache, fluid leakage or vaginal bleeding need assessment, especially before full term.

Pause and note when each tightening starts and stops. Drink fluids, empty your bladder, rest or change position, and see whether the pattern settles. Avoid relying on a home timing pattern if you feel unwell or notice other pregnancy symptoms.

Keep your maternity unit’s contact details available and follow the advice given for your stage of pregnancy. If you are unsure whether the contractions are changing, call for guidance and describe their timing and associated symptoms.

Contact your maternity team urgently for regular painful contractions, fluid leaking, vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement, severe abdominal or back pain, fever, or contractions before full term. Use emergency services for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting or feeling seriously unwell.

Ask how your unit wants you to time contractions, which symptoms require immediate assessment, and whom to call outside clinic hours. If episodes recur, ask whether an examination or monitoring is appropriate.
