How long does wound suturing take to work for cuts and lacerations?

Stitches reduce movement between wound edges and can help control bleeding. They do not eliminate infection risk or guarantee the final appearance of the scar. Healing is influenced by the cut's depth, location, blood supply, skin tension and your general health. Some sutures dissolve; others need removal at a planned review, with timing chosen for the body area and wound.

Keep the wound covered and dry for the period advised, then clean it gently without scrubbing. Avoid stretching, heavy lifting or contact activity that pulls the wound. Do not pick scabs or apply creams unless instructed. Take prescribed medicines as directed, and attend the appointment for removal if the stitches are not dissolvable. Protect a healed area from strong sunlight to reduce darkening of the scar.

Seek prompt advice if the wound edges separate, bleeding continues despite firm pressure, redness spreads, pain increases, pus appears, or you develop fever. Numbness, loss of movement, a pale or cold body part, or a deep cut involving a hand, face or joint needs timely assessment. Sudden swelling or severe pain after the repair also warrants urgent review.

Ask whether your stitches dissolve, the planned removal date, how to wash and cover the wound, and which movements could strain it. Ask about tetanus protection and the expected scar changes.
