How long does wound care and dressing take to work for diabetic foot ulcer?

A dressing keeps the wound clean, manages moisture and reduces friction, but it does not remove pressure from the foot or correct poor circulation. Healing depends on ulcer depth, blood glucose control, blood supply, nutrition, infection and whether the foot is protected from repeated weight-bearing. A clinician may need to remove unhealthy tissue, assess sensation and circulation, and choose a dressing that matches the wound.

Follow the dressing schedule exactly and wash your hands before and after changing it. Keep the dressing clean and dry, avoid walking barefoot, and use the off-loading footwear or device recommended for you. Check the wound and surrounding skin each day without soaking the foot. Do not cut calluses or apply household antiseptics unless your clinician has advised it. Keep diabetes medicines and monitoring on schedule.

Contact a clinician promptly for spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, pus, a new smell, worsening pain, fever, black tissue, or a wound that becomes deeper. Seek emergency help if you feel very unwell, become confused, or the foot suddenly turns pale, blue or cold. Reduced sensation can hide serious damage, so do not wait for pain before reporting a change.
