How long does wound care and dressing take to work for cuts and lacerations?

Cleaning and covering the injury reduce contamination and friction while the edges begin to join. A shallow cut may become more comfortable within days, whereas a deep, gaping or contaminated laceration needs assessment for closure, foreign material or damage to tendons, nerves or blood vessels. A healing wound can itch or feel tight. The scar often continues to change after the surface has closed.

Keep the injured part raised if swelling is uncomfortable. Use pain relief only as directed and follow instructions about stitches, glue or strips. Check whether tetanus protection is up to date.

Seek prompt assessment if the wound edges separate, bleeding returns, pain worsens, redness spreads, pus develops, or fever occurs. Get urgent help for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, loss of feeling or movement, a pale or blue body part, or a deep cut involving the face, hand or a joint. These signs can indicate damage or infection.
