How long does wound care and dressing take to work for an animal bite?

Cleaning removes contamination and a suitable dressing keeps the wound protected while new tissue forms. Mild tenderness, swelling or a small amount of clear fluid can occur early, but the area should gradually look calmer. Bites may push bacteria deep into tissue, particularly around the hand, foot, face or a joint. A clinician may leave some bite wounds open rather than close them immediately, allowing drainage and reassessment.

Keep the dressing clean and dry, change it as instructed, and wash your hands before and after touching it. Do not soak the wound or apply unadvised creams. Elevating an injured hand or limb can ease swelling. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and check whether tetanus protection or an assessment of the animal exposure is needed.

Arrange prompt review if redness spreads, pain or swelling increases, the wound becomes warm, pus appears, fever develops, or movement becomes difficult. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, loss of feeling, severe pain, a bite to the face or hand, or any concern about rabies exposure. Do not wait for the dressing to ‘work’ when these signs appear.

Ask how often the dressing should be changed, whether the wound should remain open, and which signs mean infection. Confirm antibiotic instructions, tetanus needs and whether the animal's health or location changes the follow-up plan.
