How long does walking boot immobilisation take to work for an ankle fracture?

Short answer
A walking boot protects a suitable ankle fracture from movement as soon as it is fitted, while bone healing and a safe return to normal walking usually take several weeks and need follow-up.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What the boot does
- Limits movement and protects a stable fracture
- Recovery pattern
- Pain may settle before bone healing is complete
- Follow-up
- Check healing before increasing weight or activity
What recovery involves
The boot supports the ankle and limits painful movement while the broken bone heals. It is generally considered only when the fracture is stable and aligned enough for this approach; some injuries need a cast, manipulation or surgery instead. An X-ray and examination help determine the safest treatment.
Less pain does not necessarily mean the bone is ready for full weight. Swelling, stiffness and weakness can continue after the boot is removed. Follow-up may include repeat imaging, a check of tenderness and guidance on moving from crutches to more weight through the foot.
Making the boot part of recovery
Wear the boot as prescribed and use crutches or another aid until your clinician changes the weight-bearing plan. Keep the boot fastened securely, elevate the leg when swollen, and check the skin and toes for pressure, colour change or numbness. Only remove it for hygiene or exercises when you have been told this is safe.
Avoid running, jumping and uneven ground while the fracture is healing. Do not drive in the boot unless your clinician has specifically cleared you and local rules allow it. Complete follow-up visits so alignment, healing and ankle movement can be reassessed.
When to seek care
Seek prompt advice if pain or swelling suddenly increases, the boot rubs a sore area, or your toes become persistently numb, cold or discoloured. Get urgent help for severe pain out of proportion, a visibly deformed ankle, chest pain, sudden breathlessness or a swollen painful calf.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the fracture is stable, how much weight is allowed, when an X-ray or review is needed, which ankle movements are safe, and what criteria will guide the transition out of the boot.

Questions people ask
Can a walking boot heal every ankle fracture?
No. The choice depends on fracture location, alignment, stability, swelling and other examination findings. Some ankle fractures need a different treatment.
When can I stop using crutches?
Only when your treating clinician changes your weight-bearing instructions. Stopping early can increase pain or load the healing bone.
