How long does vaginal pessary fitting take to work for pelvic organ prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse means one or more pelvic organs press into the vaginal space. A pessary provides internal support and may reduce a dragging feeling, bulging or pressure during standing and activity. It manages symptoms while in place; it does not reverse the underlying weakness.

The right device should stay in place without significant discomfort and should not interfere with urination or bowel movements. Your symptoms may also reflect bladder, bowel or pelvic-floor problems that need their own assessment.

Use the pessary exactly as instructed and test it during ordinary activities, such as walking and using the toilet. Record pressure, bulging, leakage, emptying difficulties and any discharge or bleeding. Bring this information to the fitting review.

Attend follow-up even if the first day feels comfortable. The clinician may change the size or style, teach removal and cleaning, or discuss pelvic-floor exercises and other options suited to your goals.

Seek a fitting review for pain, repeated slipping, new sores, bleeding, unpleasant discharge, or difficulty passing urine or stool. Get urgent help if you cannot empty your bladder, have severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding or feel faint.

Ask when the fit will be reassessed, how to remove and clean the device, and which activities are safe during the trial. Ask how to tell whether a symptom comes from prolapse or from another pelvic condition.
