How long does a urine test take to work for a urinary tract infection?

A dipstick checks the urine for findings that can support infection, such as blood or chemical signs linked with inflammation. A culture sends the sample to a laboratory so any bacteria can be identified and tested against antibiotics. A negative result does not always explain symptoms, particularly if the sample was collected after antibiotics or was not a clean midstream sample.

Follow the collection instructions, provide the sample promptly, and tell the clinician about antibiotics or urinary medicines you have already taken. Drink normally unless you have been given fluid restrictions. Do not start, stop, or share antibiotics based only on a home test; treatment depends on symptoms, examination, pregnancy status, and the result.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, or feeling markedly unwell. These features can indicate infection beyond the bladder. Arrange medical advice sooner if you are pregnant, have a catheter, kidney problems, or repeated infections. Severe illness or difficulty staying awake needs urgent help.
