The operation aims to remove or reduce the tumour and make more space around the spinal cord. Pressure relief and neurological recovery are different milestones: the surgeon may achieve the first during the operation, while the spinal cord and nerves may need time to recover from compression.

Progress depends on how long the cord was under pressure, the degree of nerve injury, the tumour’s position, and whether radiotherapy or another treatment is also needed. Some symptoms may ease quickly; others can take weeks or longer, and some may not fully reverse. Rehabilitation can support transfers, walking, balance, strength, and daily activities.

Follow the surgical team’s instructions for wound care, medicines, movement, and follow-up. Tell them how your pain, sensation, bladder or bowel control, and mobility change rather than judging recovery by one symptom alone.
