How long does tumour removal surgery take to work for bone cancer?

The surgeon removes the tumour with a border of surrounding tissue when possible. Depending on its position, the operation may preserve the limb and rebuild part of the bone with a graft, implant, or another reconstruction. Tumours near a joint, nerve, or major blood vessel can make planning more complex.

A laboratory examines the removed specimen. The report helps show whether the tumour was removed with the intended margin and how it responded to treatment given before surgery, if that was part of your plan. Imaging and examinations later help assess the reconstruction, movement, and disease control.

Use crutches, a brace, or other equipment exactly as instructed, particularly if the operated bone must not carry full weight yet. Attend physiotherapy to protect the repair and restore strength safely. Take prescribed pain relief as directed and check before changing activity or lifting.

Keep the incision clean and watch the limb for changes in swelling, colour, sensation, or movement. Bring questions about school, work, sport, driving, and prosthesis care to the rehabilitation team, since timing depends on the bone and reconstruction involved.

Get urgent advice for sudden severe pain, a new inability to move or bear weight as permitted, a cold or pale limb, new numbness, fever, chest pain, breathlessness, or a wound that opens or drains heavily. Prompt review can identify infection, a blood clot, nerve or blood-vessel problems, or an issue with the reconstruction.

Ask what was removed and rebuilt, when the pathology report will be ready, what weight-bearing limits apply, and how progress will be measured. Ask which rehabilitation milestones matter before returning to work, school, driving, or exercise.
