How long does tumour ablation take to work for liver metastases?

Ablation targets a defined area in the liver using heat, cold, or another technique. The treated tissue does not always look settled on the first review, because inflammation and healing can alter the scan appearance. Your oncology team compares follow-up images with the treatment plan and considers whether the original cancer elsewhere is controlled. The review schedule can differ according to the number, size, and position of metastases, the primary cancer, and other treatments you are receiving.

A good early recovery does not prove that every cancer site has responded, and temporary discomfort does not mean treatment has failed. Imaging and clinical review provide the more useful answer.

Take medicines exactly as prescribed and gradually return to activity according to your discharge plan. Attend blood tests, clinic reviews, and imaging appointments. Bring a list of new symptoms and all medicines, including treatments given for the original cancer. Ask how ablation fits with systemic treatment, and do not change that treatment because you feel better or worse without advice.

Call your treatment team for increasing abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, worsening swelling, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, confusion, or breathing difficulty. A prompt assessment is needed for these changes after the procedure.

Ask when the first response assessment is planned, how the scan will distinguish healing from remaining tumour, whether other liver lesions need treatment, and how ablation will be coordinated with treatment for the original cancer. Ask who to contact outside clinic hours.
