How long does tumour ablation take to work for liver cancer?

Heat, cold, or another energy source is used to damage the targeted tumour tissue. That action happens at treatment, yet the treated area can look swollen or inflamed before it settles. A scan arranged after the procedure helps the team distinguish expected treatment change from tissue that may still need attention. The timing depends on tumour size and position, the ablation method, liver function, and whether more than one area was treated.

A follow-up scan may show that the treated zone is responding even while you still feel tired or sore. Symptoms after the procedure do not reliably show whether the tumour has been fully treated.

Follow the discharge instructions about rest, wound care, medicines, and activity. Keep the planned review and imaging appointment, even if you feel well. Write down fever, increasing abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or changes in urine and stool colour so you can report them clearly. Do not stop liver medicines or cancer treatment without speaking with your treating team.

Contact the treatment team promptly for worsening pain, fever, repeated vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling, breathlessness, confusion, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Seek urgent medical help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need assessment after ablation regardless of what an earlier scan may have shown.

Ask when your follow-up scan will be done, which findings will show that the treated area is responding, whether your liver function changes the review plan, and what happens if viable tumour remains. You can also ask which symptoms should be reported the same day.
