How long does tranexamic acid take to work for heavy bleeding and iron deficiency anaemia?

Tranexamic acid helps slow the breakdown of clots in the womb, which can reduce blood loss while it is being used as directed. Less bleeding may prevent further iron loss, but existing anaemia can continue until iron replacement and its cause are addressed. A clinician may use blood tests to assess haemoglobin and iron status.

Follow the prescribed schedule and do not take extra doses to speed the effect. Tell your clinician about a history of blood clots, kidney problems, vision changes or medicines containing oestrogen. Arrange review if bleeding remains heavy, lasts longer than expected or returns between treatment courses.

Seek urgent help for severe weakness, fainting, breathlessness, chest pain, one-sided leg swelling or sudden visual changes. Heavy bleeding with dizziness or signs of collapse also needs immediate assessment rather than waiting for the medicine to work.
