How long does total knee replacement take to work for knee osteoarthritis?

Short answer
Total knee replacement can lessen the deep pain from knee osteoarthritis early, while swelling, bending, strength and comfortable walking improve progressively over several weeks to months.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early priority
- Safe walking, wound care and swelling control
- Later gains
- Knee movement, thigh strength and endurance
Why the knee takes time to settle
The replacement changes the worn joint surfaces, but the operation also temporarily irritates skin, muscle and other tissues around the knee. Early stiffness and swelling can make the knee feel less capable even as the arthritic pain improves. Bending, sitting down, standing up and climbing stairs may each recover at a different pace. A warm or tight feeling after exercise can occur during healing; a trend toward easier movement matters more than a single difficult day.
Supporting knee recovery
Use the prescribed walking aid and perform the exercises your physiotherapist gives you, including gentle bending, straightening and thigh-muscle work. Take short walks and rest between activities rather than testing the knee with a sudden increase. Elevate the leg or use cold therapy only as instructed. Keep the wound protected, take medicines according to the discharge plan, and arrange help with meals, bathing and stairs during the early period. Your surgeon should guide return to driving, work and sport.
When to seek care
Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening swelling or pain that is not settling. Get urgent help for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, a markedly swollen calf, or a foot that becomes cold, pale or numb. A fall followed by severe pain or inability to bear weight also needs prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what knee bend and straightening goals are suitable for you, how long to use a frame or crutches, and how to manage swelling after exercise. Clarify when you may drive, work, kneel, use stairs independently and return to preferred activities.

Questions people ask
Why is my knee still swollen after surgery?
Swelling can persist while tissues heal and may increase after activity. Worsening swelling with heat, redness, fever or severe pain needs medical advice.
When will stairs feel easier?
Stairs become easier as bending, strength and balance return; use the technique and support taught by your physiotherapist.
