How long does hydroquinone treatment take to work for perioral hyperpigmentation?

The skin around the mouth may be repeatedly exposed to saliva, friction, hair removal, cosmetics or irritating skincare. If inflammation continues, pigment can be added while existing pigment is fading. Hydroquinone acts on pigment production; it does not remove the trigger or repair every cause of a rash.

Use the prescribed thin layer on clean, dry skin and keep it away from the lips unless specifically directed. Choose a bland cleanser and moisturiser, reduce rubbing, and pause fragranced or stinging products around the mouth. Daylight protection helps reduce further darkening.

Record whether itching, scaling or burning occurs before each application. If a rash is present, treating the inflammation may be needed before pigment-focused treatment can work comfortably.

Contact your clinician for worsening burning, swelling, cracking, blistering or a spreading rash. Get prompt advice if the skin develops unusual blue-black darkening or if the patch changes despite stopping irritants. Do not cover a concerning reaction with more cream.
