How long do topical corticosteroids take to work for psoriasis?

Psoriasis is driven by inflammation and faster-than-usual skin-cell turnover. A topical corticosteroid suppresses inflammation where it is applied, so itch and redness may settle before thick scale has fully lifted. Response can differ on the elbows, knees, face, folds, hands, and feet, and treatment may need to be combined with another approach.

Apply the prescribed amount to plaques rather than unaffected skin, and follow the planned duration. Moisturiser can soften scale when advised, but do not pick or vigorously scrub. Avoid using a potent product on the face, groin, or skin folds unless a clinician specifically prescribed it.
