How long do topical corticosteroids take to work for lichen simplex chronicus?

Lichen simplex chronicus is a scratch-and-itch cycle: rubbing injures the surface, and the repeated irritation makes the skin thicker and more sensitive. The medicine calms inflammation, but texture does not change as quickly as itch. A patch can return if scratching, friction, sweating, stress, or an underlying rash continues. Treatment may therefore include identifying the trigger as well as applying the prescribed steroid.

Use the medicine exactly as prescribed on the affected patch. Keep nails short, avoid rubbing, and choose loose breathable clothing where friction contributes. A plain moisturiser can support the skin barrier when used as advised. Do not cover the area with a dressing, or use the medicine on the face, groin, or folds, without clear instructions. If the itch is not settling during the planned course, arrange a review rather than repeatedly extending treatment.

See a clinician if the patch bleeds, oozes, develops crusting, becomes warm or increasingly painful, or fails to improve as expected. Seek assessment if itching is widespread or disturbs sleep despite treatment. A persistent thick patch may need confirmation of the diagnosis and a plan to break the itch cycle.
