How long do topical corticosteroids take to work for lichen planus?

A reduction in itch can happen before the purple, brown, or thickened areas look different. Lichen planus may affect skin, the mouth, scalp, nails, or genital skin, and each site can respond differently. Persistent colour change after inflammation improves does not necessarily mean the treatment failed. Oral or genital symptoms need a clinician’s assessment because a skin cream may not be the right formulation or strength for those areas.

Apply the prescribed product in the amount and pattern advised, usually to active affected skin rather than normal surrounding skin. Continue for the planned course even if itching improves early, and use moisturiser as directed to reduce dryness. Do not place a steroid near the eyes, on broken skin, or under an airtight covering unless your clinician specifically instructs you. Review the plan if there is no meaningful improvement after the agreed period.

Contact your dermatologist if lesions spread, become painful, ulcerated, infected-looking, or interfere with eating, urination, sleep, or daily activity. Seek prompt care for eye pain or vision changes. A new rash that has not been diagnosed should be examined, since several conditions can resemble lichen planus.
