How long do topical corticosteroids take to work for irritant contact dermatitis?

Irritant contact dermatitis follows direct damage from substances such as repeated water exposure, cleansers, solvents or friction. A corticosteroid calms the inflammatory response, but the barrier still needs time to rebuild. Ongoing contact can make symptoms return as soon as treatment stops. Cracking, scaling or tenderness may therefore lag behind the first reduction in redness and itch.

Follow the prescribed application instructions and use a bland moisturiser regularly to support the barrier. Replace harsh cleansers with a gentle option, rinse residues thoroughly and pat skin dry. Use protective gloves for wet work, while allowing the hands to air between tasks. Seek assessment if the rash spreads despite avoiding the suspected irritant, becomes painful or oozes, or interferes with sleep or work. Increasing warmth, swelling, pus or fever can signal infection and needs prompt care. A persistent or recurring rash may need evaluation for allergic contact dermatitis or another condition, especially when the exposure is unclear.
