How long do topical corticosteroids take to work for insect bites?

The medicine dampens the skin’s inflammatory response to the bite. It does not kill bacteria, treat a severe allergic reaction or prevent a new bite. Several itchy bumps may reflect a stronger local reaction or repeated exposure. Scratching can break the skin and allow infection, so persistent worsening is not a reason to apply more medicine without advice.

Clean the area gently, use a cool compress and avoid scratching. If a corticosteroid has been recommended, apply a thin layer only as directed and keep it away from eyes, mouth and open wounds. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness or widespread hives. Seek prompt assessment for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, pus, fever, a bite near the eye, or a suspected venomous bite. Arrange review when the reaction is not improving within the advised period or keeps recurring.
