How long do topical corticosteroids take to work for hand eczema?

Hands are exposed repeatedly to water, soap, detergents, friction and workplace materials. Those exposures can keep the skin barrier irritated even when the medicine is calming the flare. Dryness and fissures may therefore remain after itch improves. The cause also matters: allergic contact dermatitis, irritant exposure and another hand condition can look similar and may need different management.

Use the medicine exactly as prescribed and spread it over the active eczema, including edges if instructed. Apply a fragrance-free emollient frequently, especially after washing, and use lukewarm water. Wear suitable protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with breaks to reduce sweating. Arrange medical review if cracks are deep, movement is painful, the rash keeps returning, or there is no meaningful improvement within the plan you were given. Pus, increasing warmth, swelling, spreading redness or fever can indicate infection and needs prompt assessment. A clinician may ask about work, products and glove use to identify an overlooked trigger.
