How long do topical corticosteroids take to work for drug rash?

Topical corticosteroids reduce local inflammation, so itching, redness, and swelling may settle before every mark disappears. They do not remove the medicine that triggered the reaction. Some drug eruptions need a clinician to review the suspected medicine and decide whether it should be stopped or replaced.

Apply the prescribed strength in a thin layer to affected skin and follow the schedule given. Do not put it on the eyes, broken skin, or large areas unless instructed. Use a bland moisturiser to reduce dryness, and avoid starting another new cream while the rash is being assessed. Keep a list of recent medicines, supplements, and timing of the rash.

Seek urgent medical help for blistering, skin pain, peeling, sores in the mouth or eyes, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, or a rapidly spreading rash. Contact the prescriber if there is no meaningful improvement after the advised course or if the eruption worsens.
