How long do topical corticosteroids take to work for contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction after skin touches an irritant or an allergen. The medicine dampens inflammation, but repeated contact with soap, fragrance, metal, plants, gloves, or another product can keep the rash active. Dryness, scaling, or colour change may remain after the itch has eased.

Apply the prescribed steroid in the amount and pattern advised, then wash your hands unless they are the treated area. Stop using suspected products and use gentle, fragrance-free skin care. If the exposure is work-related, discuss protective alternatives with a clinician. Avoid applying steroid to the face, folds, or broken skin unless specifically instructed.

Seek care for rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, pus, fever, facial or eye swelling, or breathing difficulty. Arrange a review when the rash fails to improve as expected, keeps returning, or affects a large area; patch testing or another diagnosis may be considered.
