Cheilitis means inflammation of the lips. Saliva, lip licking, cosmetics, toothpaste, foods, weather, infection, or another skin condition may keep the area irritated. A steroid can calm inflammation without removing the trigger, so improvement may pause or reverse if exposure continues. Cracking and scaling can also outlast the initial soreness.

Use the prescribed product exactly as directed and apply it only to the intended skin. Avoid licking or peeling the lips, fragranced products, and any suspected irritant until the cause is clearer. A bland protective ointment may be recommended by your clinician. Do not use a stronger steroid or continue treatment around the mouth longer than advised.
