The treatment may stop the yeast from multiplying before the patches look normal again. Fading or darkening can remain after treatment has worked, especially on the chest, back, neck or upper arms.

Scaling, fine flaking and any mild irritation should settle first. The patch edges should stop spreading, and new spots should become less likely once the medicine has had time to act. Existing areas can still look white, tan or pink because pigment production changes more slowly than the surface infection.

Colour can be more noticeable after sun exposure because surrounding skin tans while affected skin may not. This difference does not by itself show that the antifungal has failed.

Use the cream, lotion, shampoo or wash exactly as directed, including the recommended contact time and course length. Applying more often will not necessarily speed the colour change and may irritate the skin. Keep treated areas dry when practical, and avoid sharing towels, clothing or personal applicators.

Take a clear photograph in similar lighting before treatment and again after the recommended course. If scaling has stopped but the colour remains uneven, allow time for pigment to recover rather than repeatedly changing products without medical advice.

Arrange a review if the patches continue to spread, develop marked redness, pain, swelling or oozing, or do not improve after you have completed the directed treatment. A clinician may need to confirm the diagnosis because several skin conditions can resemble tinea versicolor.

Seek prompt medical advice for a severe reaction such as facial swelling, blistering, widespread hives or trouble breathing after applying a product. Recurrence is common in warm, humid conditions, so a clinician may discuss a prevention plan if episodes keep returning.

Ask which formulation suits the affected body area, how long it should remain on the skin, and when you should expect scaling to stop. Also ask whether persistent colour change is expected, how to distinguish recurrence from slow pigment recovery, and whether another diagnosis should be considered if the patches change.
