How long does topical antibiotic therapy take to work for folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles. Bacteria can be one cause, but shaving, friction, blocked follicles or yeast can produce a similar-looking rash. An antibiotic is more likely to help when bacteria are involved. Tenderness and fresh pustules may settle first, while flat red or brown marks can remain after active inflammation ends.

Apply the prescribed medicine as directed and avoid squeezing or scratching the bumps. Pause close shaving over the area, reduce rubbing from tight clothing, and use gentle cleansing. Do not continue an antibiotic beyond the agreed plan without review, particularly if new lesions keep appearing.

Seek medical review if the rash is spreading, forms larger painful lumps, drains pus, or does not improve in the expected timeframe. Urgent assessment is needed for fever, rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, or feeling unwell.
