The surgeon removes part or all of the thyroid, depending on the tumour and the planned treatment. If the whole thyroid is removed, thyroid hormone replacement is usually needed and the dose may be adjusted using blood tests. Some people also need radioactive iodine or other follow-up, while others need observation. The timing depends on the surgical findings and pathology review.
