After vaccination, the vaccine gives cells temporary instructions that help the immune system recognise a viral target. Those instructions and related components are then broken down. Immune cells can retain a memory of the target, so the body may respond more quickly if it encounters the virus later. The presence of immune memory does not mean vaccine material is still circulating.

Keep a record of your doses and discuss future doses with a clinician who knows your medical history. Ask about timing if you are acutely unwell or taking treatment that affects immunity. If you develop symptoms after exposure, consider COVID-19 testing and follow local infection-control advice.
