How long does tetanus vaccination take to work for cuts and lacerations?

Tetanus bacteria can enter through damaged skin, especially when a wound is deep, punctured or contaminated. A clinician considers the wound and your previous vaccination doses before deciding whether vaccination, another preventive medicine or wound treatment is needed. The vaccine cannot replace washing, removal of debris or repair of a wound that is gaping. Do not wait for tetanus symptoms to decide whether advice is needed.

Wash your hands, rinse the cut with clean running water, remove only visible loose debris, and apply firm pressure with clean material if it is bleeding. Cover it with a clean dressing. Arrange assessment for a deep, dirty, puncture or gaping wound, or if you are unsure when you last received tetanus vaccination. Avoid putting harsh chemicals into the wound.

Seek urgent care if bleeding will not stop, the cut is deep or widely open, a foreign object remains, or you have numbness, loss of movement or severe pain. Arrange prompt review if redness, warmth, swelling, pus, worsening tenderness or fever develops, as these can indicate wound infection.
