How long does tetanus vaccination take to work for animal bite?

Tetanus is linked to bacteria entering damaged skin, while an animal bite can also cause tissue injury, bacterial infection and exposure to other hazards. The need for a vaccine or another preventive medicine depends on your vaccination history, the wound and the animal involved. A dose after a bite supports prevention but does not clean the wound or treat an established infection. Protection from earlier doses may change the decision, so tell the clinician when your last vaccination was if you know.

Wash the wound thoroughly with running water and soap, control bleeding with clean pressure, and cover it with a clean dressing. Arrange medical assessment promptly, even if the wound looks small. Do not close a deep or puncture wound yourself. Mention the animal species, whether it can be observed, where the bite happened, and whether saliva contacted broken skin.

Get urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, a deep wound, severe pain, loss of movement or feeling, a bite to the face, hand or genitals, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, swelling, pus or fever. Seek immediate advice after a bite from an unfamiliar, stray or unusually behaving animal because additional preventive decisions may be time-sensitive.
