How long does targeted therapy take to work for thyroid cancer?

Response may mean a tumour becomes smaller, remains stable, grows more slowly or causes fewer symptoms. Timing depends on the thyroid cancer type, its molecular features, the medicine selected, previous treatment and whether disease is present in other parts of the body. A person may feel no immediate change even when treatment is helping.

The team may review neck symptoms, swallowing, breathing, pain, examination findings, blood tests and scans. Thyroid-related blood results can be affected by the cancer and by treatment, so they are interpreted with imaging and the wider clinical picture.

Take the medicine at the prescribed time and record swallowing changes, neck swelling, pain, diarrhoea, rash, appetite and energy. Keep all blood tests and imaging appointments. Check with your oncology team before taking a new medicine, supplement or herbal product, and do not stop treatment because a scan or symptom change is taking time.

Ask when your first response review is planned and which result would lead to continuing, adjusting or changing treatment. If you miss a dose or vomit after taking it, follow the written instructions or call the treatment unit.

Contact the treatment team promptly for new or worsening difficulty swallowing, neck swelling, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, severe rash, unusual bleeding or marked weakness. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, sudden facial swelling, chest pain, fainting or confusion.
