How long does targeted therapy take to work for neuroendocrine tumours?

For a neuroendocrine tumour, benefit may mean the tumour stays stable, grows more slowly, shrinks, or causes fewer hormone-related symptoms. Some people notice symptom changes before imaging, while others feel well even when treatment is controlling the disease. The medicine may need time to reach its intended effect, and the timing depends on the drug, tumour features, spread, previous treatment and general health.

Your oncology team may use blood or urine tests, hormone measurements, symptom records and scans. A scan is interpreted alongside earlier images and your clinical picture; a single result does not always show the whole response.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and keep a record of doses, new symptoms and changes in appetite, bowel habits, flushing or pain. Do not stop treatment or alter a dose because improvement is slow or because side effects appear. Tell the team about every medicine, supplement and herbal product, because interactions can change treatment levels.

Keep scheduled blood tests and scans even when you feel no different. Ask which signs will be used to assess control and when the first formal review is planned. If a dose is missed, use the instructions supplied by your treatment team rather than taking extra medicine.

Contact your oncology team promptly for persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, inability to drink, marked weakness, yellowing of the skin, unusual bleeding, new severe abdominal pain, or a sudden change in flushing or palpitations. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pain, confusion or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

Which response are we aiming for: symptom relief, tumour shrinkage or stable disease? Which tests will show whether this treatment is working? When will my first review and scan take place? What should I do if side effects interfere with a dose?
