How long does targeted therapy take to work for leukaemia?

Leukaemia is a group of blood cancers, and the timing of response depends on its type, the treatment target and your overall health. Blood counts may change before you feel different. Your team may check blood cells, symptoms, examination findings and treatment-related effects; a bone marrow test may be needed to assess cells that blood tests cannot show. Early results help guide care but do not always provide the final answer.

Take every dose as directed and attend frequent blood-test appointments when scheduled. Record temperature, bleeding, bruising, breathlessness, tiredness, mouth changes and missed doses. Check with the oncology team before taking a new medicine, supplement or vaccine. Do not pause treatment because blood counts change or because you feel better; the team may need to adjust treatment safely using your test results.

Contact your care team immediately for a fever, chills, new cough, painful urination, unusual bleeding, black stools, rapidly spreading bruises or severe weakness. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting or bleeding that does not stop. In leukaemia, infection and bleeding can become serious quickly, so follow the emergency instructions given by your team.

Ask which blood-count changes you expect first, how often tests will be repeated, and whether a marrow assessment is part of your plan. Ask what temperature or bleeding symptom needs immediate action, how to manage a missed dose, and how the team will define a meaningful response.
